Derek Anderson

Derek Anderson's performance was the lone bright spot in last night's embarrassment. Terry Pluto was impressed enough with what he's seen from Anderson to suggest in this morning's column that Anderson be given the chance to start next weekend against the Ravens. I couldn't agree more. Like Pluto, I'm not looking to hang a savior of the franchise tag on the guy, but Anderson's got a strong arm and a quick release, so what the hell--let's see how he does on the road against one of the NFL's best defenses. If he passes that test, maybe they've got something there.

I'm not a member of the "Charlie Frye sucks!" crowd, but let's face it, the hometown boy hasn't exactly shown enough to be viewed as a sacred cow on a team that's 4-9. So, let's see what Sideshow Bob's got.

You've got to admit, the kid has got a certain something...

Unlike Dennis Northcutt, who has a certain nothing...

Frye doesn't suck, he's just not that good. At this point the Browns would be wise to give Anderson a few starts if only so that they know with a higher degree of certainty what they have to do this off season.

I was so upset that I sent this letter to the Browns. If you would like to do so as well, the e-mail address is:

Dear Cleveland Browns,

I know you probably don’t care or won’t even get around to reading this, but I was so frustrated and disgusted after watching 2 and a half quarters of last night’s game, I had to write and express my anger and frustration towards the team that I love. I have faithfully and continually purchased plane tickets and game tickets to come to a few games each year from DC and have also bought the NFL Direct Ticket package for the sole purpose of watching my beloved Browns. This is in addition to hundreds of dollars spent on merchandise that when worn in this area, brings stares akin to having an arm sticking out of my head. After 6 years of being in isolation as a Browns fan and living among a sea of Steelers’ fans and blindly and unequivocally giving my time and money to a team that is 500 miles away, I am going to stop. Why the hell should I care about a team that doesn’t care enough to put forth an effort against a team that is supposed to be our most hated and bitter rival and, in turn, humiliates the city of Cleveland? You are representing an area that is the birthplace and capital of football and has football programs and fan support on all scholastic levels that is unmatched. This team is all this city really has to embrace, thanks to a terrible city government and resulting economy. When the professional team representing this proud football area presents a product like what we saw on the field last night, it is sickening and unacceptable. Until I see something other than unmatched effort week-in and week-out, I will have to refrain from giving my time and monetary support. I know no one is going to read this, but I needed to get this off of my chest.

Regrets,

Let's talk about the bright spots from last night. Here we go:

As a diehard Steelers fan, let me honestly state that I feel for the Browns, and even moreso for you, their fan base. Yeah, I don't like your team, but some of that comes from the rivalry that used to be there as I grew up. Those were GAMES: 12-9, 13-10, Mud. Snow. Fans. Great memories on both ends of the turnpike. Modell and Co. tore that away from US, not just you. Before, we were like two identical twins (same blue-collar work ethic, same ethnic makeup in the towns, same love for our teams) -- and siblings usually do fight harder and more intensely. Now we loathe the Ravens (the "old Browns") while trying to resurrect hatred for you...but it's not working quite yet. Anyway, stay loyal to the team. Hope that your management comits to a long-term coach and GM / personnel staff as well. (Many folks hate Cowher, but the guy brings results, and some of that is just endurance and tenure. Heck, we should've had three more Bowl appearances under his tenure, but the team choked.) If your owners stop changing coaches and staff like so many used bingo cards and actually get some talent (not Stone Hands chokers and trash-talking duds), there will be a resurrection of Browns football. For now, you have my sympathies and wishes for better times. For me: I'll stick with a consistently-proven winner, thank you very much; fewer dents in my forehead from banging it on the wall.

Why not start him? Sign a mediocre veteran this offseason and have the QBs battle it out in camp... without LeCharles Bentley...

also, is it weird to anyone else that the best commentary on Cleveland sports comes from the ABJ as opposed to the Plain Dealer.
